Titans Take Care of Business on the Road

Posted Monday, November 09, 2009 by Nitin Karkhanis
There comes a time when you simply have to take care of business and not rely on anyone else to do it for you. Well, this is where the Titans found themselves entering their final game of the season. The Titans could clinch the #2 seed with a victory over Pinkerton, or rely on Salem to beat Central to claim the #3 seed. Or worse yet, a Central win combined with a North loss could push the Titans to the #4 seed.

The Titans chose to take care of business and went to Derry on a mission. The defense proved their naysayers wrong by playing outstanding football and limiting Pinkerton to two touchdowns! On Saturday the Titans demonstrated that defense wins games.

The defensive line of Kevin Rosenberg (56), Tim Croteau (21), Joel Pachecho (63), and Wilson Pena (64) created havoc all day long. Their pass rush disrupted Pinkerton’s passing game. What the defensive line did to Pinkerton’s passing game, the linebacker crew of Chris Anderson (44), Dave Duong (2), Dylan Brodeur (4), and Trevor Rancourt (11) did to Pinkerton’s running game. These guys filled holes and delivered blows all day long. The secondary play of Jahmar Gathright (27), Andre Williams (30/25), and Jeff Taylor (7) complemented that of their colleagues. Taylor and Gathright broke up two big Pinkerton pass plays. Taylor also picked off a pass setting up North’s final score. Rancourt had a late-game interception that would seal the victory for North.

The Astros drew first blood and scored a touchdown in the 1st quarter. The Titans answered back with a 30-yard Anthony Guidice field goal. After exchanging downs, the Astros blocked a punt and recovered the ball deep in Titan territory. This would lead to a 14 – 3 Astro-advantage. Not to be cowed, North answered back in the final 45 seconds of the 1st half. The Titans moved the ball 68 yards and pulled within 4 on a Brandon Karkhanis-to-Rancourt 31-yard touchdown pass.

The Titans received the football to open the 2nd half and put together a 5:30 minute drive that would give them the lead for good. North moved the ball methodically down the field using a heavy dose of Brodeur, Williams, and Gathright. The boys upfront, Mitch Gaffney (54), James Murphy (65), Nick Cummings (59), Tim Coy (72), and Zach Hunnewell (70) punched open several holes and the unit put the Titans on top, 17 – 14. The Titans would score once more, thanks to Taylor’s interception, giving North a 23 – 14 advantage.

The Titans took care of business and if you watch this highlight clip, I think you'll agree.

Boys, you may not recognize the music, but I'm sure your parents and coaches will.

Congratulations players and coaches! Now on to the playoffs!
